The Kevin P. Kane Memorial Fund

April 11, 2019

Dear Family and Friends,

Allow me to offer my profound thanks to those of you who have been contributors to the Kevin Paul Kane Memorial Fund over the years. Let me also welcome newcomers who are learning for the first time about Kevin and the Fund that acknowledges his life, its profound impact, and continuing contribution to the health of our community.

For those of you who did not know Kevin, he turned a life shortened, at the young age of 26 by a rare form of cancer caused by a toxic waste site in Ashland, into a life that made an immense difference. Kevin accomplished that in only 11 short months, from diagnosis to death. He made the public aware of the problem through the visibility of his struggle and its root cause. He advocated for new public policy which has saved lives and avoided the suffering of countless community members who may have been harmed by similar circumstances.

His life exemplified courage and is acknowledged through each scholarship awarded to promising Ashland young people in pursuit of their college dreams. Additionally our fund extends to people demonstrating courage through difficult sufferings. The fund, to date, has distributed over $147,250 to deserving students, including our Courageous Awards. This was accomplished over the last 20 years thanks to the generosity of so many of you.

Friends and supporters, it is now time to join together to honor Kevin by making certain that this program can positively affect many deserving students in our community for years to come.  We also need to broaden our purpose.  We will maintain a core of scholarships but widen the recognition and expansion of our Courageous Awards. Courage is most associated with the meaning of Kevin’s life. This will require all of us.

We can do this with your continued generosity and an expanded network of supporters, The Kevin Kane Memorial Fund Inc. is an eligible 501(3)(c) non-profit organization and your contributions are tax deductible to the extent provided by law. For those of you working for a corporation, your donation may be matched, and we encourage you to explore that possibility.

Please help us fulfill our goals and Kevin’s dream of a life of Courage. If you are willing and/or are able to contribute to our continuing project, you can do either of the following:

  • Mail a check payable to “Kevin Kane Memorial Fund Inc” to Marie Kane at 4 Woodland Road, Ashland, MA 01721

  • Make a donation using PayPal or a credit/debit card by clicking the Donate button below.

No amount is too small. As a result of your unselfishness we will be able to maintain scholarships and recognize people who live a dauntless life. Thank you in advance for your generosity and may God bless you.

Gratefully,

Bernie and Marie Kane

 Letter from Kathie Dooley

Dear Bernie and Marie and the entire Kane Family:

"Words cannot express my gratitude and the genuine honor I feel to have been given the 'Courageous Spirit Award' at Kevin's event.

"I was so touched by your words and have been blessed by your support.  You are truly 'family' to me. Thank you for the wonderful plaque and incredibly generous donation.  I am awed by your kindness and buoyed by your love.

"I plan to be at next year's event -------and maybe another split. Lots of love, Katie"

Unfortunately, Katie passed, in September 2010, before the next event. She was known for her "splits".
